Why the Companion PC?
The Companion PC is part of the CMPC (classmate) line of computers that is specifically designed for the K-8 learning environments. These notebooks are ruggedized, kid-tough and portable for the classroom and home environment. Many districts have been waiting for a device that is low powered, low cost and can take the abusive classroom nature and still remain functional. The Classmate PC was designed with the classroom environment in mind as an affordable laptop to bridge the technology divide that exists today in some districts. By allowing children to participate with the Companion PC, they can have access to their laptop at home as well. If Internet service is unaffordable or unavailable at home, children can use the library and community centers that provide wireless access, which is provided free-of-charge in many communities.
What is one-to-one computing?
The definition of one-to-one computing is basically providing every staff, student and teacher with a portable device such as a notebook or a tablet for use in the classroom and at home.
How is one-to-one funded?
There are many different ways that this initiative is funded and it varies from state to state. Some districts write grants, some use bond funds, while others use their state provided technology dollars. Some districts also have private donations and federal funds available for the one-to-one initiative.
Who can help districts learn how to apply for the 21st Century grants that are available?
LEAs (Local Educational Agencies) are prepared to help schools participate in the Ed Tech Competitive 21st Century learning environment grants that cover wireless in the classroom, which includes laptops and portables.

How do I upgrade the memory?
The Companion PC comes standard with 512 MB RAM. It can be upgraded to 1 GB using standard SO-DIMM 1 GB module which replaces the 512 MB module.
Can I get additional batteries?
Additional batteries are available in 4-cell or 6-cell configuration:
1. The 4-cell replacement – lasts 3.3 hours – cost $55.00
2. The 6-cell replacement – lasts 5.0 hours – cost $75.00

What are the mobile cart options?
1. Flexcart 16 (part # KIT-MAFC16): Holds 16 Companion PCs that can be charged simultaneously. Optional all-day sidekick batteries for 16 notebooks (part # KIT-MA-SDK-16).
2. Flexcart 24 (part # KIT-MAFC24): Holds 24 Companion PCs that can be charged simultaneously. Optional all-day sidekick batteries for 24 notebooks (part # KIT-MA-SDK-24).
3. 802.11 B/G Wireless: Option for mobile carts, holds 32 users (part # MA-WNPECIGBAS32).
How can I upgrade to XP Pro?
For schools that have a volume licensing agreement with Microsoft, they can provide us with their image which includes XP Pro. The cost for imaging the companion PC is $29.00.
For those schools that do not have a volume licensing agreement with Microsoft, the XP Pro is available through distribution.
Can I get the Companion PC with Linux?
The Linux version is available for orders of 500 units or above. The product is setup at Synnex
(Synnex part # 2271389 and manufacturer part # MNA-MACPMC558001-A/L).

What is the standard warranty?
The Companion PC comes with a One Year Manufacturer warranty for hardware defects.
Additional warranty can be purchased to extend the manufacturer warranty for up to three years.
Insurance coverage for accidental damage is also available through your reseller.
